I started working on a new project this week. It's an idea that I originally pitched as a short for my VCA application back in late 2015, but quickly realised was much larger than I'd be able to realise in my year at VCA.
It's also set in regional NSW, so not really the ideal project to work on from Melbourne. But I'm back in Sydney now with a looming deadline and the time feels right.
I'm developing the idea as a feature and working on coming up with a short that could sit alongside it as a companion piece. It's a project that has a fairly large research component, and sits squarely in a genre I haven't worked in before. So it feels like there's lot of material to wade through at the moment and I'm not entirely sure where to start.
Already, I've had some really exciting discussions about the material with several of my key collaborators. Those chats are invigorating and help me unlock certain questions I've had about the project, or things that I only realise as I articulate them. I live for those conversations.
But the writing is the tough part, the singular job, the lonely pursuit.
